Question
I heard about your feed from Heather Moffett and would like further info.
We have taken on a horse with 2 or 3 gastric ulcers. One of which is grade 3. This horse is currently half way thru a 28 day course of Gastrogard and appears to be responding well. Our concern is that this horse has lost a huge amount of weight and muscle and is in very poor condition. He is a large horse 17.1h is obviously in no condition to be working at the moment but is turned out for 9 hours each day. Do you feel one of your products could help with this animal? If so could you please advise which product, amounts. Thanking you in advance.

Answer
Dear June,

Thank you for your email. When coping with gastric ulcers it is worth remembering how horses have evolved into trickle feeders of high fibre products; their digestive tract has developed to have feed going through it almost continually. Ulcers occur when the stomach is empty for long periods and the gastric acid starts to attack the stomach lining. The best treatment is to get the horse back to eating like a horse, by ensuring that he is fed adlib forage and high fibre feeds. Not only does this help to fill the digestive tract but makes the horse chew, thus producing saliva, which will also acts as a buffer against the gastric acid.

So against this back ground we have developed a range of feeds that when fed alongside good quality forage enable a horse to be fed as he has evolved to eat. For weight gain I would recommend our Pure sport & stud to be fed at around 3kg a day for this horse, and if needed our Pure condition at a later date. But once you have the desired condition on the horse you could then drop down to either the Pure Working or Pure Easy.

I hope this is useful and I hope your horse improves and recovers.

Kind regards

Robert
