EMW UK

Well aware of the desperate plight faced by many equines around the UK and Ireland, following a campaign on facebook in winter 2010, The Pure Feed Company donated a tonne of feed to worthy equine charity Equine Market Watch.

EMW UK is dedicated to monitoring the welfare of equines in markets and auctions and actively campaigns against the indiscriminate breeding of valueless foals whose average life span is a scant and miserable 6 months. EMW UK are active in the EU with regard to live transportation issues and will investigate any incidents of cruelty, neglect and abuse inflicted on any equine. This worthy charity currently has more than 100 equines out on long term loan in approved homes, while their dedicated sanctuary provides a refuge to many horses and ponies that are deemed unsuitable for loaning, due to health issues or extreme age and provide them with the care, attention and good quality of life that every horse and pony deserves.

Having seen the fantastic work undertaken by EMW, we decided we had to do even more to help. As a result, Pure Feed have taken on continual sponsorship of the EMW ‘mascot’ a gorgeous 4 year old named Luya. Luya’s mum, a section A grey mare aged 26 years now, was rescued from an uncertain future from a horse market when she was heavily in foal and came to live at the sanctuary. Luya was lucky to be born into the loving environment that is EMW and as a result was lucky not to suffer from the same nutritional deficiencies experienced by the many, many under nourished equines taken into care by EMW. However, her well built, genetically ‘chunky’ frame could predispose her to an equally dangerous condition that thousands of horses and ponies suffer from each year – laminitis. At Pure Feed we hope to work with EMW to develop a feeding and exercise regime for Luya that will keep her in tip top condition and help her to develop into the stunning mature pony that she promises to be.
